Transition from Mistral to Levante for projects¶
In this post we want to answer a few questions which may arise for project administrators and principal investigators at DKRZ. Some of the dates for requesting new resource allocations will be different in 2021. From 2022 on we will return to the usual schedule.
My project’s allocation period ends on June 30, 2021. What’s next?¶
Your project will be automatically extended with the same resources as for the current allocation period. After July 1, 2021, you can continue working on Mistral as you did before.
I want want to start a new project in 2021¶
We offer you to start with a test-project. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org containing the following information
Title of the project
Existing username on luv.dkrz.de for principal investigator
1-2 page abstract about the project for publication (pdf format)
You don’t (yet) have to write a formal proposal. This will be required later when you request resources for the next allocation period. The project will start with limited resources on Mistral. Once Levante becomes available, you can also use that system.
Can I get more resources for my ongoing project on Mistral?¶
All resources on Mistral for 2021 have already been allocated. You can continue to use your current allocation on Mistral until end of 2021. For Levante see below.
How can I use Levante?¶
The current schedule for the installation of levante is described here. We will keep that page up-to-date as installation progresses.
As soon as Levante becomes available, your project will get access. Existing allocations are converted into resources of Levante it the following way:
A quarter of your remaining compute time on Mistral will be granted on Levante. This is because Levante’s nodes are at least four times as powerful as Mistral-nodes
You can continue to use Mistral in parallel to Levante
Your project’s work space will have the same size on Levante as on Mistral
In the meantime, please contact us if you run into a resource shortage on Mistral. For storage resources we may be able to lend some space not used by other projects. Please understand that you may have to free the storage on short notice if the overall free space drops below a critical amount.
Compute resources can be used as available. You can draw more compute time than what was allocated to your project if other projects do not submit jobs. As always, it is advisable to specify your job runtime as accurately as possible to benefit from the backfilling mechanism of the scheduler.
When can I request resources on Levante?¶
The next call for proposals will start on July 1, 2021. The deadline will be August 31, 2021. You will be able to request resources for 14 months. It will also be possible to request additional resources on Levante for projects in the allocation period July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.
Your new resources will be granted on November 1, 2021. Projects starting in January will receive
1/7 of their compute resources in 2021 and the remaining 6/7 in 2022.
Disk storage on Levante will be granted in full on November 1. and the same amount again in 2022.
1/7 of Archive resources will be granted on November 1. and 6/7 in 2022.
All resources of January-projects granted in 2021 will expire on December 31, 2021 as usual.
July-projects will get the resources in addition to what they already have in their current allocation period.
What happens with my remaining compute resources from 2021?¶
Any compute resources you receive in 2021 will be on top of what you already have. You can use the resources until your current allocation period ends. This is December 31, 2021 for projects starting on January 1. and June 30, 2022 for projects starting on July 1.
